Name of the course: K1-01 Historical painting techniques Learning outcomes: Basic knowledge of the materials and techniques applied in panel painting and polychrome sculpture, and the appropriate terminology. Participants are expected to be able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in relation to conservation and restoration. Content: Reconstructions of historical grounds in painting on wooden supports, medieval gilding techniques and structures of paint layers, with reference to historical written sources (12th-14th centuries). Teaching methods: Practical exercises, lectures on materials of medieval painting and art history. Name of the course: K1-02 Photographic documentation Learning outcomes: General and basic knowledge of photography and photographic documentation. Also the ability to apply photographic documentation in practice. Name of the course: K1-03 Introduction to the history of art and styles of the West (with the Department of Monumental Art) Learning outcomes: Basic knowledge of art history as a discipline and ability to identify and describe characteristics of styles using the appropriate terminology. Content: Presentation of the scope and methods of the discipline as well as a survey of the development of styles in architecture and the pictorial arts. Name of the course: K1-04 Painting on wood: Visual analysis, documentation Learning outcomes: General introduction to visual analysis of painted wood and the ability to perform and document such analyses as preparation for a proposal for conservation. Content: Visual analysis of painted wood to describe materials, condition, damage and so forth, as well as documentation of the results of the examination. Content: Introduction to preparation and analysis of microscopic cross-sections of paint samples from various painted objects. Name of the course: K2-07 Painting on wood: Photographic documentation and X-ray Learning outcomes: The ability to carry out photographic documentation and assess x-radiographs. Name of the course: K2-08 Pigments and dyes Learning outcomes: Fundamental knowledge of the classical pigments and dyes, their history, chemical structure and physical-chemical properties. Also competence to perform a chemical analysis and to identify pigments. Content: An examination of a selection of classical pigments and dyes which have been used for cave paintings, wall paintings, painting on wood and canvas, frescoes and illuminations. Practical laboratory work with chemical analysis and identification of pigments. Name of the course: K2-09 Painting on wood: Conservation Learning outcomes: Basic knowledge of the materials and methods applied in conservation of typical damages in paint-layers on wood. Ability to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in relation to conservation of damaged/flaking paint-layers on wood. Content: Examination and description of the objects, proposal for the conservation measures, treatment and documentation of the conservation carried out using knowledge and skills acquired in other courses.
